We’re more “connected” than ever—but many of us feel more alone. As work, learning, and even healthcare move online, the quality of our relationships matters more than the quantity of messages or followers.
While digital tools can help us stay in touch, intentionality is key. Are we truly connecting—or just scrolling?

These friends are on the other side of the country! Specifically, I met my friend Dr. Jamal when we were in medical school (over 10 years ago) through an organization call the Student National Medical Association. This picture was taken the first time I met his wife and son in person but it has felt like I knew them for years! It is totally possible to cultivate and maintain friendships for the long term even when you can't see them in person daily.
Here are three tips for building real relationships online:
1. Be present: Have video calls instead of endless texts. Make space for depth.
2. Schedule virtual rituals: Weekly check-ins, digital dinners, or book clubs can keep relationships thriving.
3. Blend virtual with real-world connection: Online friendships can turn into in-person support when safe and possible.
Your LivingScript: Start one intentional digital connection this week. It could be: 20-minute virtual coffee chat, a weekly group text check-in, a digital game night or movie night, or a shared playlist or group journal!
How'd it go? Let me know!
