Building a Wellness Routine That Works for You

There’s no perfect routine, just what works for you. A sustainable wellness practice fits your lifestyle, your values, and your needs. The same way that there is no perfect body, no perfect practice, and no perfection, period! I would be lying if I said I wasn't regularly working on something to improve. What matters is that you're getting out there and putting forth the effort.
I started my exercise routine initially with a virtual trainer during 2020. I found other things I was interested in too: cycling, African dance, hiking. They were added. I started cooking all of my food including making my own yogurt and baking my bread from scratch. I was regularly attending to my self-care and spiritual wellness and had joined a couple of bible study groups where I made some new friends.
And then life got in the way. My grandmother was diagnosed with colon cancer. We spent 3 months in the hospital and doing therapy. She needed help afterwards which meant my schedule changed dramatically.
When she started to recover and I was able to reclaim a little time, I found OrangeTheory Fitness. I fell in love and committed to at least twice a week. I also added my own health coach to keep me accountable and a love of farm fresh produce to meal prep every week. Then I had my health scare. I'm fine! But it set back my exercise routine in exchange for some physical therapy for a while.
I was eventually able to get back in the game but then my grandmother passed away. I tried to cope with exercise because I didn't want to turn to food and got injured, yet again! I took a break and with multiple nagging muscular injuries, I added yoga. I found yoga initially in 6th grade and I loved it but I wasn't able to be consistent. This reintroduction helped me to center my mind, stretch my body, and leave the overthinking at the door. I found a space for my grief through movement. I was able to eventually restart OrangeTheory and later, I found aerial yoga. Being the perfect balance of strength, yoga, and fun, I had no choice but to include that too.

It's taken time to cultivate a lifestyle that I love and is sustainable. And if you notice, it has changed with the curveballs life has thrown. While my downward facing dog and my problem areas may not ever be perfect, I've created a life that I love and that lifestyle loves my body back with all of it's supportive healthy habits.
Now its your turn! Here are some tips to shift towards wellness.
1. Start small: Pick 1–2 habits to focus on—like drinking water or stretching.
2. Make it joyful: Choose activities that feel good, not just “good for you.”
3. Set realistic goals: If you’ve got 10 minutes, use them well.
4. Adapt it: Life changes. So should your routine.
Remember, rest, pleasure, and connection are also part of wellness—not just productivity and output.
