Follow Me to the Farm: Connecting Communities to Fresh Food

We don’t just need more produce—we need a deeper relationship with where our food comes from. Visiting local farms, especially BIPOC-led or urban farms, can be an empowering way to reconnect with food, culture, and health.

“Follow me to the farm” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s a call to action. I have a garden but I know gardening is time intensive. Not everyone wants to do this. These local farms bridge the gap. When children and families see food grown locally, they’re more likely to eat it, value it, and advocate for healthier systems. Farms can also be healing spaces, promoting environmental justice, food sovereignty, and even mental health through nature connection.

My favorite farm-fresh recipe right now: Homemade Vegetable Sushi Rolls!!! Totally packed with veggies from the farm and a super great meal in this heat!

You’ll need:

Nori

1 cup cooked brown sushi rice

1/2 cup sliced carrots

1/2 avocado, sliced

1 small cucumber

2 leaves of kale

Tofu for a pop of protein

It’s only 3 steps!

1.Spread rice onto nori sheet, leaving a 1-inch border.

2. Add filling.

3. And ROLL tightly.

Your LivingScript: Find a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) or farm this summer— grab some produce and take your family, friends, or community group with you!
