October is Health Literacy Month. Health literacy means being able to:
- Understand your diagnosis
- Navigate insurance or prescriptions
- Ask questions and advocate for yourself
Low health literacy can lead to medication errors, hospitalizations, and worse outcomes, especially in marginalized communities where systems are already difficult to navigate.

What helps?
- Plain language from providers
- Visual aids and translated materials
- Culturally relevant patient education
Your LivingScript: Ask yourself, “Do I understand my health conditions and medicine?” and if not set up an appointment to ask. Don’t feel comfortable with your doc enough to do that? Get a new one! Your doctor is your partner in health.
