World Stroke Day (October 29) reminds us that stroke is a leading cause of death and disability but it’s also often preventable. But in honor of my grandma, we'll celebrate a little early.
On July 19th 2024, she went in for a supposedly routine pacemaker placement to control her AFIB.
Her blood was thin, no clots to worry about so no stroke risk, right?
She had a stroke because her blood pressure went too low during the procedure. She didn't have these regular symptoms below. All of a sudden she was unable to remain standing, started to have seizures, and spent the next 3 months in the hospital before choosing hospice exactly 1 year ago. She died in January 2025 with a new understanding that control with medication isn't the same as healthy. In that last 6 months, shared her story as a warning to take care of your body before it's too late.
Remember the signs: F.A.S.T.

Black and Hispanic communities face higher stroke risk, often due to inequities in hypertension care, stress, and delayed treatment. Don't get caught unaware.
Education, early action, and regular check-ups can change outcomes.
